Your Physical Education teachers hope this management plan will help you to a happy and successful year in Physical Education class at Martin Luther King Jr. Junior High School.
The Goal of Physical Education at Martin Luther King Jr. Junior High School
Our goal is to provide a safe, fun, and encouraging environment where your child can develop their physical, mental, and social skills and an appreciation for lifelong fitness.
The Physical Education program’s objectives are to promote:
- An active participant in all activities
- General awareness
- Personal responsibility
- Coordination and sportsmanship
- Maintain state physical education standards
- Demonstrate motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
- Demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, and strategies as they apply to learning and performance of physical activities.
- Assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.
- Demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies to improve health and performance.
- Demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies as applied to learning and performance of physical activity.
PE Clothes/Lockers: Scholars will be expected to participate in all PE class activities if they choose to suit up for class or not. PE involves a lot of movement and some days we are in the grass, or in the gym.
However your scholar chooses to dress for PE, they are EXPECTED to PARTICIPATE fully in PE activities. 50% of their grade is participation, if a scholar is unable to perform a physical activity because of their school shoes, or sweater they are wearing for that period, they will lose participation points for the activity we are performing. The PE Department believes firmly that participation is learning, if you are not participating in our PE activity you are not learning the physical skill or movement we are doing. (Example): If a scholar is wearing their school uniform and is performing all the PE activities (warm ups, drills, game we are playing that day), they will receive full credit for the day.
If your scholar does want to have MLK PE clothes (shirt and shorts/sweats) they can be purchased on our online school store or in person in the Main Office.
Locker Room Terms:
-
Daily use Lockers: These are all the lockers on the outside rows of the locker room. These lockers DO NOT HAVE LOCKS ON THEM, and should not have a lock on them at the beginning of each period of each class.
-
Rented/Leased Locker with school lock only: These lockers are in the middle rows of the locker room and have school issued locks on each of the lockers. If you are choosing to use one of the MLK lockers, you have to use an MLK issued lock.
Options for scholars using the locker room:
-
Option 1: Daily use locker WITHOUT a lock: These lockers, you can open up daily and do not have a lock on it. Put your belongings in this locker and retrieve them at the end of the period. Scholars should know the number of the locker they are using in case they have to leave the period early and retrieve their belongings.
-
Option 2: Daily use locker WITH a lock: Your scholar has their own lock from home (combination lock, key lock, bike lock) that they use to lock their belongings up for the period ONLY. At the end of the period you must take all your belongings and the lock off the locker. Scholars can put this lock and any clothes they use for PE in their backpack, scholars should bring this lock with them each day you wish to lock a daily use locker.
-
Option 3: Rented/Leased Locker: These are MLK issued lockers with one of the school’s locks on them. If you choose this option, you must be able to open a combination lock and use a MLK PE lock. You can store your shoes, PE clothes or other belongings in this locker and leave them locked up at the end of the period. This will be your locker only and you can use it as long as you are MLK PE from 6th-8th grade. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for the lock, if it is damaged or locked you will be charged to replace it.
Attendance: Scholars will be marked tardy if they are not ON THEIR ROLL NUMBER on the black top or in the gym (rainy days) once the bell rings. If a scholar is absent, our assignments are in google classroom and have study guides to help complete as homework.
Grading: Grades will be updated via Aeries and assignments returned on Google Classroom. Please contact me if you see any mistakes, and are unsure about a grade. Grading will follow the PE Department agreed upon scaling:
20% Assignments (On Google Classroom, Worksheets, Group work, etc.)
30% Assessments (Physical Fitness Testing, Mile Days, Quizzes, etc.)
50% Participation (Engagement in all activities, No Cell-Phone, The “3 B’s,” etc.)
A: 90% - 100% B: 80% - 89% C: 70% - 79% D: 60% - 69% F: 40% - 59%
Citizenship: Scholars will receive an N/U for their citizenship if they have 5 or more tardies in a progress report or report card grading window. Scholars who opt out of physical activity 3 or more days in this window will also receive an N/U. Scholars who have their cell phone out in PE will receive an automatic N if the phone is out in PE 3 or more days.
Expectations:
-
Scholars are expected to participate in physical activities in class everyday.
-
Scholars are expected to keep their cell phones away and in their lockers/backpacks during class.
-
Scholars are expected to use the restroom before or after class in the locke room, and are encouraged to bring their own water bottles.
-
Scholars are expected to complete assignments on google classroom by the assigned due date.
-

I-ready: The PE department is committed to a school wide effort to improve our math and reading skills in PUSD. Make ups for missing miles will be I-ready My Path teacher assigned lessons this year. We will also assign I-ready lessons on minimum days and these assignments will count towards scholars grades in PE.
